Urge your senators to oppose two anti-immigrant bills

Action: Urge your senators to vote “NO” on two anti-immigrant bills that passed the House of Representatives on June 29, 2017.

Background: The “No Sanctuary for Criminals Act” (H.R. 3003) would authorize the withholding of federal grant money to so-called “sanctuary” jurisdictions where local police refuse to act as immigration enforcement officers. To keep our communities safe, all individuals – including undocumented immigrants – must be able to report crimes without the fear of being deported and separated from their families.

“Kate’s Law” (H.R. 3004) is a bill named after a woman who died after being shot by a previously-deported undocumented immigrant. The bill is named after her against her parents’ wishes. It would increase maximum sentences for immigrants convicted of felonies who re-enter the U.S. after being deported. It would also put many immigrants seeking asylum, or safety, in the U.S. at risk of being prosecuted for unlawful entry.

Faith reflection: “Beloved,” John tells us, “Let us love one another….We love because God first loved us….Those who love God must love their brothers and sisters” (1 John 4:7-21). Rather than dehumanizing undocumented immigrants, we must work together to find real solutions to violence.
