Urge President Trump and members of Congress to protect women and children from Central America

Action: Send a letter to President Trump and your members of Congress urging them to ensure that the federal government response to mothers and children seeking safety in the U.S. is compassionate and humane.

Background: In recent years, there has been an increase in mothers with children – and teenagers traveling without family – coming to the U.S. to seek safety from violence in their home countries (primarily El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras).

Recent actions by the Trump administration will subject these families to tougher legal procedures and lengthy periods in detention. Some families are now being turned back at the U.S.-Mexico border in violation of U.S. treaty commitments to protect refugees. Other new policies threaten to strip protection from unaccompanied children if they are reunited with a parent in the U.S. and to prosecute relatives who bring children to the U.S. – without regard to the real danger many of these children face in their home countries.

Many of the mothers are fleeing domestic violence and/or gang violence in their home countries, which have some of the highest rates of violence against women and girls in the world. Local police routinely dismiss domestic violence as “family violence.” Teenage girls are often under threat of sexualized violence and murder from local gangs. In 2014, U.S. immigration counts ruled that women who are victims of severe domestic violence in their home countries are eligible for asylum in the United States.

Faith reflection: In Matthew 18:3-5, Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.” (Matthew 18:3-5) How we respond to mothers and children coming to the U.S. seeking safety demonstrates how well we are living out Jesus’ teachings to aid the vulnerable and to welcome children and immigrants.

Action: Send a letter to President Trump and your members of Congress urging them to ensure that the federal government response to mothers and children seeking safety in the U.S. is compassionate and humane.
