Urge Congress to support a robust foreign assistance budget

Action: Urge Congress to support a robust foreign assistance budget

Background: There are ongoing global crises, including an unprecedented 65.6 million people forcefully displaced from their homes by conflict, persecution and natural disaster. Globally, about 815 million people are hungry and undernourished.

On February 12, the president released a budget request for fiscal year 2019 that proposes a drastic cut in the international affairs budget while at the same time proposing $716 billion in total defense spending, a huge increase of $80 billion over FY 2017.  The U.S. foreign assistance budget already makes up less than one percent of the federal budget. Urge your members of Congress to reject the administration’s 30 percent cut to these vital programs.

Faith reflection: St. Paul admonishes us to be selfless in sharing our resources, to overflow in a wealth of generosity (2 Corinthians 8:2). As a privileged nation, we should assist people who are in need around the world and uphold justice through a robust foreign assistance budget.
