Support foreign assistance

Action: Ask your members of Congress to protect the foreign assistance budget.

Background: According to the Global Humanitarian Overview, about 135.3 million people are in need of emergency humanitarian assistance as a result of violent conflicts, disease and natural disasters.

On March 11, President Trump released his Fiscal Year 2020 budget request that proposes a 24 percent cut to international development and humanitarian assistance. These programs work to alleviate suffering and save the lives of people in dire need.

Overall, while increasing military spending to $750 billion (a 5 percent increase), the president’s budget would drastically reduce U.S. investments in life-saving programs, as well as peacebuilding programs to address complex emergencies and violent conflict.

But it is Congress who allocates the dollars to these programs, so it is important they hear from you that you would like to see funding for these programs protected.

Faith reflection: Scripture admonishes us to “not withhold good from those it is due, when it is in your power to do it” (Proverbs 3:27). “Those who are generous are blessed, for they share their bread with the poor” (Proverbs 22:9).

Action: Ask your members of Congress to protect the foreign assistance budget.
