Stand with Standing Rock

Stand with Standing Rock and other Native nations on March 10 As they call for respect for their right to protect land and water resources

Three actions you can take:

  • Attend the Native Nations March on Washington on March 10 or plan/attend a vigil or other action in your local area
  • Hold a small group class on the issues (see resources below)
  • Write a Letter to the Editor of your local paper on or around March 10 (see resources below)

Background: The Standing Rock Sioux, as well as many others, have raised concerns about construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The primary concerns are the risk to a water source used by millions and whether local tribal leaders were properly consulted about impacts to their sacred sites.

Late last year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers halted pipeline construction pending an environmental review, a review of the treaty consultation process and consideration of whether an alternate path might pose a reduced risk. On January 24, President Trump signed an executive order calling for immediate approval of construction permits. On February 8 the Army Corps announced they were canceling their reviews and would grant the permits to continue construction. The permits are now being challenged in court (click here for the latest legal updates).

March 10 action: “The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and Indigenous grassroots leaders call on our allies across the United States and around the world to peacefully March on Washington, D.C. We ask that you rise in solidarity with the Indigenous peoples of the world whose rights protect Unci Maka (Grandmother Earth) for the future generations of all.” “For those who cannot march with us, we ask that you take peaceful action at home in your tribal nations, states, cities, towns, villages and provinces.” More

Faith reflection: “But let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Amos 5:24
