Oppose efforts to build walls and criminalize immigrants

Call the White House and your members of Congress to let them know that you oppose efforts to build more border walls, punish “sanctuary cities,” and further criminalize immigrants and refugees.

Background: On January 25, President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. government would begin plans for a wall across the U.S. southern border, an extremely costly measure that will not address the root causes of migration. Trump has also ordered a huge expansion of immigrant detention and will require families and children fleeing violence and seeking asylum to be detained as soon as they cross the U.S. border — if they are not turned away completely.

Trump’s order would also force local jurisdictions to collaborate with federal immigration officials or risk losing federal funding for vital community-based safety programs. This punishment for so-called “sanctuary cities” will not make communities safer but will erode trust between local law enforcement and immigrant communities across the country.

The President also issued an executive order on January 27, which was revised on March 6, that  essentially freezes the refugee resettlement program and  restricts  entry to the U.S. by citizens of six countries  (Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen) for 90 days.

Faith reflection: President Trump’s executive actions portray immigrants and refugees as criminals and threats rather than seeing them as God’s beloved children. By building walls and turning away refugees we ignore Christ’s call to care for those in need and to love the stranger among us as we love ourselves.

  • President Trump: (866) 961-4293
  • Your Senators and Representatives: (202) 224-3121*  (Note: please call this line 3 times to be connected with your representative and two senators.)

Sample Script: “I’m your constituent from [City, State]. I strongly oppose building a wall along our southern border, detaining families and children crossing the border, turning away asylum seekers fleeing violence and persecution and discriminating against refugees based on their faith or country of origin.

Walls are a waste of resources and do nothing to address the root causes of migration. I also oppose ending funding for sanctuary cities. Sanctuary city policies increase public safety by building trust between local law enforcement and all community members.”

[Consider sharing a personal story about how immigrants and refugees benefit and are welcomed into your community.]

You can also tweet @realDonaldTrump and your Senators/Representatives: “.@[HANDLE], my community stands with immigrants! Support sanctuary cities, protect asylum seekers, reject border wall!”
