Support maternal and child nutrition

Action: Ask your representative to support efforts to improve global nutrition.

Background: After years of decline, there is worrying evidence that global hunger is increasing again, with 821 million people undernourished in 2017, driven largely by conflict and climate change. Lack of access to food and inadequate nutritional variety cause undernourishment, obesity and disease. Currently 151 million children under the age of 5 have stunted growth as a result of malnutrition.

On January 14, the Senate passed S. Res. 260, which had been introduced by Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Chris Coons (D-Del.). The House still needs to pass its resolution, introduced by Reps. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) and James McGovern (D-Mass.), to encourage greater efforts by the United States to eradicate global malnutrition. If your representative is not already a co-sponsor, please ask him/her to do so.

Faith reflection: “God said, ‘See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food’” (Genesis 1:29).

Action: Ask your representative to support efforts to improve global nutrition.

As a committed Catholic Christian, Franciscan friar and clergy, I uphold the common dignity of all human beings to be created by God in the divine image and likeness. Therefore it is incumbent upon me to speak out via this medium about the imperative of providing nutritious food for mothers and their children, especially the most vulnerable in our world, very often in developing countries around the world. I urge you, therefore to vote to provide for this need with necessary funds available. Thank you and God bless you, our nation and all those in need. Peace
