Support maternal and child nutrition

Action: Ask Congress to support efforts to improve global nutrition.

Background: After years of decline, there is worrying evidence that global hunger is increasing again, with 821 million people undernourished in 2017, driven largely by conflict and climate change. Lack of access to food and inadequate nutritional variety cause undernourishment, obesity and disease. Currently 151 million children under the age of 5 have stunted growth as a result of malnutrition.

Reps. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) and James McGovern (D-Mass.) have introduced a resolution to encourage greater efforts by the United States to eradicate global malnutrition. Also, a Senate companion, S. Res. 260, has been introduced by Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Chris Coons (D-Del.). If your member of Congress is not already a co-sponsor, please ask him/her to do so.

Faith reflection: “God said, ‘See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food’” (Genesis 1:29).

Action: Ask Congress to support efforts to improve global nutrition.
