Background: Today there are more displaced from their homes than at any time since World War II—65 million people.
President Trump’s budget proposal would dramatically cut programs that provide support for refugees and others who have been displaced from their homes. The Migration and Refugee Assistance account would be cut by 10 percent compared to last year. International Disaster Assistance, which provides support for people who are displaced within their home country, would be cut by 43 percent.
But while the Trump administration proposes budget numbers, it is Congress who allocates funds. As Congress determines funding levels, it is critical that they hear strong support from their constituents for these programs.
Faith reflection: “You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Deuteronomy 10:19).
