Offering sanctuary

From the Jan.-Feb. 1983 Memo:

In Brooklyn, New York, the United Revival Mennonite Church (Iglesia Menonita de Avivamiento) became the first Mennonite church to become a sanctuary….Since then, several Mennonite groups have become actively involved in both the sanctuary and underground railroad for Salvadoran and Guatemalan refugees….In the newly convened Congress, an opportunity exists to remedy the current injustice in which hundreds of undocumented refugees are forcibly returned by U.S. authorities to the countries from which they fled for their lives….For Mennonites with a long history of refugee experience, our sympathetic voice is now needed.
