President Trump’s announcement earlier this week that the U.S. officially recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, without any corresponding acknowledgment of the city’s significance for Palestinians, is dismaying and will set back the already-struggling efforts for peace in the region.
Palestinian Christian leaders in Jerusalem caution that “such steps will yield increased hatred, conflict, violence and suffering in Jerusalem and the Holy Land, moving us farther from the goal of unity and deeper toward destructive division.” They note their hope that “the Holy City can be shared and fully enjoyed once a political process helps liberate the hearts of all people, that live within it, from the conditions of conflict and destructiveness that they are experiencing.”
Call the White House (202-456-1111) and your members of Congress (202-224-3121) to let them know that you are dismayed by this unilateral action. The U.S. should immediately halt plans to move the embassy from Tel Aviv and rescind its formal recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
