Ahead of the Mennonite World Conference in Harrisburg, PA this week, a number of MCC partners are taking advantage of their time in the U.S. to do some advocacy in Washington D.C. We were delighted to host colleagues from Justapaz and Mencoldes last week.
We met with many different offices to talk about the current state of the peace process in Colombia and the strong support faith leaders across Colombia are voicing in favor of peace. Jenny Neme, director of Justapaz, shared an interfaith letter that was published recently in a prominent weekly news magazine, La Semana.
Other colleagues shared about the documented threats against churches and church leaders in different parts of Colombia, especially in the rural areas that are controlled by paramilitary groups. They shared cases from the most recent Justapaz report, Prophetic Call (in English). They are also doing a lot of national level advocacy to change laws regarding conscientious objection and create alternative service options for COs.
We were honored to meet with Representative Gallego from Arizona, the first Colombian-American member of Congress. He is an active support of the peace process and made time to listen to the Justapaz delegation and their recommendations to continue to push the peace process forward.
