Jesse Epp-Fransen reflects on the lectionary passages for September 30, 2012.
James writes that “The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven” (James 5:15). This is a powerful vision of prayer that I often fear we have lost. We no longer feel that prayer is one of our strongest tools, a tool with the power to reshape the world. In James, prayer is a communal activity that is powerful and effective. Within the context of prayer, members of the community confess their sins and receive forgiveness. The church confesses to one another and intercedes on one another’s behalf. The result of this communal action is the forgiveness of sin.
