The United States maintains a stockpile of more than 5,000 nuclear weapons, each one capable of causing great devastation.
The United States has taken some steps to reduce this number, including signing the New START treaty with Russia in 2010. In March President Obama re-affirmed his commitment to work toward a nuclear weapons-free world. Prominent former officials, including Henry Kissinger, Sam Nunn, George Schultz and William Perry, have also called for a world free of nuclear weapons.
