Jenn Wiebe, of MCC’s Ottawa Office, reflects on the lectionary texts for this coming Sunday, September 11:

God’s alternative kingdom is a participatory kingdom. One that requires our active collaboration. The parable’s ungrateful servant never caught on to this vision—to the distinction between living in the empire and the alternative kingdom of God.

Rather than being transformed by mercy, he simply re-engages in the dominant system as it was, leveraging his own position to keep a fellow servant shackled by debt.

To this day, we all live and work in systems that are saturated with “debt”—structures and relationships tainted by a struggle for power, status, wealth, and prestige, which alienate people rather than build community…
