Many migrants today leave home in search of better economic opportunities. Though the international community has set standards for protecting refugees—those fleeing war or political persecution—there are no provisions for “economic migrants.” However, to a parent whose child is malnourished or dying from a preventable disease, the threat is no less real than a bullet or a bomb.
