Support diplomacy, not war, with Iran

Talks held between Iran and the P5+1 (U.S., U.K., Russia, France, China, Germany) on April 14 were described as “positive” and a subsequent round of discussions is set for late May in Baghdad.

This is a welcome step, as diplomacy is essential if the differences between the U.S. and Iranian governments are ever to be resolved. Congress’ actions can either undermine or support diplomatic talks. It is critical that they hear constituent support for diplomacy.

May 6, 2012 Lectionary Reflection

April 24, 2012

Jesse Epp-Fransen, Legislative Assistant and Communications Coordinator for the MCC Washington Office, reflects on the lectionary texts for May 6.

It is important in these moments to remember that “dominion belongs to the Lord” and in the end we are called not to rule in the way that nations rule, but to be ruled by our faith. We are called to love one another, as we have been loved. “Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John 5:5).

April 29, 2012 Lectionary Reflection

April 19, 2012

Paul Heidebrecht, Director of the MCC Canada Ottawa Office, reflects on the challenge of following Jesus in the lectionary reflection for the 4th Sunday of Easter.

In the passage from Acts, the Apostle Peter does not hesitate to proclaim Jesus’ true identity and saving power. This is quite striking, given that he has been imprisoned by the same religious authorities who turned Jesus over to be crucified. Peter, the disciple who had earlier denied knowing Jesus three times, is now offering this testimony even though he may lose his life as a result.

Take Action for Peace in Colombia

April 16, 2012

Today is the National Day of Action for Colombia. Join with thousands across the country in calling upon Congress to support policies that promote peace and justice in Colombia.

Displacement in Colombia continues to be an ongoing crisis that has forced over 5 million people from their homes. Colombia is currently the world’s leader in internally displaced peoples. The Colombian government has taken little action in curbing the violence or protecting those being forced from their homes.

The National Days of Prayer and Action for Peace in Colombia is a chance for congregations and groups across the US to ask our government to take action and pursue policies that promote protection for those at risk of displacement, seek to end all violence in Colombia, and cut off harmful military aid to Colombia.

Over the weekend President Obama was in Colombia for the Summit of the Americas. While he was there, President Obama announced that U.S.-Colombia free trade agreement, on hold for years due to serious labor and human rights concerns, will be implemented starting May 15. President Obama has chosen to continue ignoring the human rights violations occurring Colombia and implement the free-trade agreement.

Sign a petition to Congress calling for policies that promote life and dignity rather than death and violence.

When the law shatters families

April 12, 2012

Tammy Alexander writes about immigration and family separation in the Mennonite World Review.

The stories are heartbreaking. More than 5,000 children are in foster care because one or both of their parents has been deported or is in immigration detention. Many of these parents may never see their children again.

Once detained, immigrants are often transferred to facilities hundreds of miles from their homes, are unable to attend court hearings on parental custody, and have their parental rights terminated after an absence of several months.

April 22, 2012 Lectionary Reflection

April 11, 2012

Matthew Dean, an intern in the MCC United Nations office, reflects on the connection, and often disconnection, between how we understand Jesus and how that effects our actions.

When we advocate for peace among the nations, we are proclaiming the forgiveness of the collective sin of violence. In a resurrection community, we recognize that as we are forgiven we no longer must live in the sin of violence. Working for peace is how we proclaim the name of Jesus to all nations.
