December 23, 2011

Rachelle Lyndaker Schlabach writes about the end of the Iraq war and rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran in the latest Third Way Cafe.

One would think that policymakers would have no interest in getting into another conflict in the region. But since early November, U.S.-Iran relations, which have long been frosty, have gotten even more tense.

Ending Gun Violence in Mexico

December 2, 2011

Policy Intern Heather Sell writes about gun violence in Mexico and the U.S. origin of up to 2000 guns a day.

Violence in Mexico has erupted to shocking levels in the last five years, accounting for the death of approximately 40,000 individuals. The problems associated with violence in Mexico are multi-faceted and deeply rooted. But one area where the U.S. can and should take action relates to illegal gun smuggling across the U.S.-Mexico border. According to a Senate report released by Senators Dianne Feinstein (CA), Charles Schumer (NY), and Sheldon Whitehouse (RI), thousands of guns used by Mexican cartels and gangs originate in the U.S. Of the more than 29,000 guns turned over to the U.S. Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives by the Mexican government, over 70% of the weapons were traced back to the United States. Current data suggests that 2,000 weapons freely flow from the United States to Mexico each day.

Global Warming in India

November 18, 2011

Pastor in residence Earl Zimmerman reflects of the effect climate change is having in India.

We’re now much more aware of the fact that our world is an integrated ecosystem and that actions or lifestyle choices made by people in one country or region affect the whole ecosystem. The biblical creation story of God placing Adam (humankind) in a garden to till and keep it (Genesis 2: 15) reminds us of our responsibility to care for the earth.

Remit us our debts

November 9, 2011

Jesse Epp-Fransen writes about the biblical command to forgive debts and its relation to the current “super committee” for Third Way Cafe.

Debt is a term that appears frequently in the Bible. Jesus uses examples of the forgiveness of debt to speak about the Kingdom of God on multiple occasions. It seems clear that if someone owes us a debt, we should forgive it. But what about when we are the debtor?

Clayton Thomas-Muller, of the Pukatawagan Cree Nation, is an anti-tar sands campaigner with the Indigenous Environmental Network, and is responsible for coordinating an indigenous team which operates both in the United States and Canada supporting locally led tactics and strategies aimed at stopping the Canadian tar sands expansion and its encroachment into traditional and treaty territories of first nations in Alberta and British Columbia.

This intervention, says Thomas-Muller, also includes the United States and binational pipelines such as the existing Keystone pipeline as well as the currently proposed Keystone XL, which will travel over 1,500 miles from Alberta, Canada, to refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast….
