The cluster bomb is a weapon that continues to cause thousands of
civilian casualties decades after its use. With unexploded munitions lying hidden in the ground people find themselves falling victim while going about daily activities.

In 2010 an international treaty known as the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) took effect. While the United States has not yet agreed to the treaty, a bill has been introduced in the U.S. Congress known as the Cluster Munitions Civilian Protection Act

Indeed, the amount of money the United States spends on its “security” is staggering. Currently the United States spends more on its military than nearly all other nations of the world combined. The base budget for the Pentagon exceeds half a trillion dollars, and the number soars well above $700 billion when the cost of the wars is added in…
Yet the budget that Congress finally passed for Fiscal Year 11 increased military spending over last year’s level. The same budget included deep cuts to public housing, housing for low-income seniors and persons with disabilities, and job training.

DREAM Act Reintroduced

May 13, 2011

On Wednesday, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and 32 other Senators reintroduced the DREAM Act (the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, S.952).  Unfortunately, the bill has very slim prospects of passing in the current Congressional session (2011-12).

California takes decisive step against Congo’s conflict minerals

From the Christian Science Monitor:

A committee of the California State Senate passed a bill Tuesday that will curb the use of conflict minerals from Congo. The unanimous, bipartisan vote in the Governmental Organization Committee is an important first step to making California the first conflict-free state.

If it passes the full assembly, the bill would prohibit the state government from contracting with companies that fail to comply with federal regulations on conflict minerals.
